Not only unnecessary, but actually kind of baffling as to why the protagonist is white rather than Native American. Would have been a lot better had they changed his character to be both more interesting in general (how about something new in our characters), and more interesting specifically given Hollywood's desperate need to diversify they stories they tell us (aren't there enough white characters already?).
