Review of Wind River (2017) by Lindley B — 18 Feb 2018
This was my favorite movie of 2017. Tightly plotted, set in the harsh winter in the Wind River range, the characters all ring true, and there is no sugarcoating anything. Rather the movie and characters just tell it like it is during a murder investigation on an indian reservation, for good and bad.
The story is unusual in showing the mental and physical strength needed to survive and prevail in unforgiving environments that still exist. In a year when very mediocre or even bad movies have received breathless praise (e.
G. Lady Bird, Shape of Water respectively), I don't understand why this movie has been so neglected, except that Harvey Weinstein's company owned distribution rights for it for a while. But really that shouldn't be a factor in recognizing a great story, well acted and directed, and a powerful movie experience to which Weinstein contributed absolutely nothing.
