Review of Wind River (2017) by Brendanus G — 17 Mar 2018
I mostly enjoyed this movie, but a couple of things bothered me about it. First, this is the 2nd Taylor Sheridan movie I've seen with a female lead character who is written to be completely useless and out of her depth. The 1st Taylor Sheridan movie I saw was Sicario, and in that movie, Emily Blunt's character is basically the same as Elizabeth Olsen's character in this movie. They are both useless and out of their depth compared to the males in their respective movies. Makes me wonder if Taylor Sheridan views all females this way.
Secondly, a parallel is drawn between being a detective and being a hunter in this movie. They're the same, right? A detective hunts criminals while a hunter hunts animals, right? This is why we're supposed to believe that Jeremy Renner's character, a hunter, is able to help solve the crime in this movie. But, all he really does in this movie is spot some snowmobile tracks (that end up leading to some breakthroughs in the case), which is something anybody could do, even if they weren't a hunter.
