Review of Win Win (2011) by Tom R — 23 Jan 2012
(4 Stars) Win Win is a great character study and despite looking "ordinary" on the surface, it has a complex story. What lawyer/wrestling coach Mike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti) does to get extra money is dubious, but very human.
.. and that's what I like about this movie: it's a very human dramedy. Mike isn't a movie hero; he feels like a normal guy who loves his family, has an inadequate job, but you can tell he tries at life.
His client is the very old, dementia-ridden Leo (Burt Young) who Mike puts in a retirement home and becomes his legal guardian for the monthly checks. Then, Leo's very quiet grandson Kyle (Alex Shaffer) shows up to live with his grandfather and he happens to be an expert high school wrestler.
I like Win Win because it feels like it has a seamless screenplay and the acting from everyone is believable.
