Review of Win Win (2011) by Bill C — 28 Sep 2011
This movie is very enthralling and it really comes across as an Adam Sandler movie without the low brow humor and I mean that in the best way. The characters all eccentric but well grounded in reality. As opposed to Hollywood flat generalization. The characters are all lovingly crafted my wife only caught the last 15 minutes but she was drawn-in and transfixed to see the outcome.
It is a very good and refreshing movie but I liked Thomas' "The Station Agent"-2003 and "The Visitor"-2008 better. The characters in the earlier work were fuzzier and less single purpose. You learn the one defining truth about each character through the action of the movie and that's it. No one ever breaks from character except in a slow evolutionary way.
I can see how this degree of editing is required to reach a broader audience, but I hope a critical success like this will allow McCarthy more freedom in his future projects. BC.
