Review of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) by Eytan D — 03 Jan 2013
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is the most imaginative of Roald Dahl's creations, and the movie works to great effect thanks to some enjoyable musical numbers, a genuine childhood innocence, a good moral message, and the performances of the cast.
Peter Ostrum makes a sympathetic and likable Charlie, and the rest of the children are believably bratty and funny. Jack Albertson is great as Grandpa Joe. But the movie belongs to Gene Wilder. He is perfectly cast as Willy Wonka, adding his own comedic touch of insanity and moral correctness to the character that might not have existed in the book at first.
In my eyes, this is his most memorable and iconic performance. A nostalgic, entertaining treat for children and adults alike.
