Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka is perfect. Somewhere between psychopath and philanthropist, Wilder makes his best performance here. The film is amazingly designed, a gleefully twisted phantasmagoria of images both surreal and lively.
The film has a warmth to it above all of its eccentricities, and is a certified classic.
