Review of Willard (2003) by Billy G — 24 Aug 2008
A wonderfully creepy horror film. I've never seen the original, but this version of Willard is quite good and I'm surprised it has never gotten much attention. Crispin Glover was outstanding as the hapless, strange Willard Stiles. From the very beginning, I became sympathetic to the character as he struggled with his job, his sick mother, and hitting it off with the fair sex. I rooted him on as he used an army of filthy rats to gain revenge on his ass of a boss Mr. Martin, played to perfection by R. Lee Ermey.
The movie is dark, dusty, and atmospheric, feeling much like an old black and white horror film than a 21st century remake. All of the settings are old looking and broken in, and the use of good cinematography adds to Willard's overall creepiness. Plus, the rats are numerous, hive-minded, and evil. People who are even the slightest afraid of rodents will find their skin crawling in no time.
Under appreciated and definitely under the radar, Williard is good, solid fun and should scratch the itch for a more unusual horror movie.
