Review of Wilde (1997) by Priscilla E — 13 Mar 2008
The legend that is Stephen Fry in a role that he was surely born to play & he plays it superbly capturing his great humanity, wit & intelligence perfectly. The beautiful Law is also good & well-cast as the naive, selfish & petulant Bosie.
The film conveys well what Ellmanns biog (the excellent book it was based on) was trying to convey, that of an intelligent man ruined by his generosity and vulnerability to his passions for Bosie. However think more attention couldve been given to other aspects of his life & other relps -like his famous friendships with Sarah Bernhardt & lilly Langtry which were hardly featured if at all-& interesting characters like Robbie Ross (credit due to Micheal Sheen who made the most of his relatively small role) & Constance couldve been developed, instead of just focusing on the affair with Bosie.
They couldve also made more of his exile years instead of glossing it over.Overall though a good film that does its magnificent subject great justice. Look out for Orlando Blooms cameo too as a rent boy.
