Review of Wild Wild West (1999) by Conrad P — 03 Jun 2009
At its worst, "Wild Wild West" represents the worse of Hollywood. A summer tent pole film that is made solely for making money. Add in a splash of action, CGI set pieces, and a bankable star then you get "Wild Wild West.
" Of course, we'd be foolish to think the summer blockbusters should be mindless shlock. Films like The Dark Knight, Men In Black, etc. beg to differ. But in its half baked attempts of entertainment, something odd happens: "Wild Wild West" becomes somewhat charming and redeemable.
Whether its the mis-guided enthusiasm from Kenneth Branagh's villain or Will Smith's always beaming presence, "Wild Wild West" plays off like a film from the canon of Ed Wood. Sure its quite shitty, but its often endearing for the attempt and the child like enthusiasm that is instilled.
