Review of Wild Wild West (1999) by Shane V — 23 Dec 2009
Wild Wild West is a movie about two government agents in the old West working together to track down a madman intent on taking over the United States. Where to begin. I'll just say it. This movie is nothing to get excited over.
Do not go into this hoping for anything super-cool. As far as I've seen, this is Will Smith's worst movie (which isn't saying much because Will Smith is a god). I'll start with the good.
The actual characters are cool and interesting. All the little gadgets used are quite fun, the dialogue is okay, & some of the comedy will give you a good chuckle. That's it. Now for the bad. There is no, absolutely ZERO character development in this film other than the two main characters learning to tolerate one another.
The movie tries and fails to capture the feel of the Old West with too much technology to seem realistic even today. It feels like a kind of alternate universe where the old west somehow collided with future technology and this is what came from it.
This movie is in no way even related to the classic TV series. The characters are the generic cocky action hero, and the brainy pacifist. Sadly (but mercifully) that's all there is to it. Wild Wild West fires 4 duds out of 10.
