Review of Wild Wild West (1999) by Larry S — 29 Jan 2009
I used to think that writing bad reviews was more fun than writing good ones... Oh, who am I kidding? Of course they're more fun!! When this turkey first hit theaters almost ten years ago, I had little interest in seeing it, knowing that it just HAD to be awful, but cable TV and boredom is a combination that will lead to one watching things he ordinarily wouldn't.
.. The premise? HAH! Get real, a negro Army intelligence agent IN 1869??? Okay, okay, it's a comedy, but comedy must have SOME basis in believability in order to suspend the disbelief. The premise of this thing was so ludicrous that I can't see how it made it beyond the pitch stage at Warner Bros.
Will Smith is one of the most likable screen presences of our time, but even he couldn't save this thing, and there are a few shots throughout the movie where his expression tells me even he knows it.
Seeing Salma Hayek's humongous cleavage and a couple of tush-shots are the ONLY saving graces for this thing, and believe me, you'd be better entertained by just finding some internet porn...
