Review of Wild Wild West (1999) by Steven Y — 27 Mar 2009
Once again, an old TV series becomes a feature film (in this case, it wasn't a smart idea). In the 19th century, special agent Jim West (Will Smith) and agent/inventor Artemus Gordon (Kevin Kline) are paired together in an attempt to stop physically disabled bad guy Arliss Loveless (Kenneth Branagh) from killing President Grant (Kline again) and overthrowing the government.
This does have some good ingredients; I don't blame the film-makers or the cast for its lack of success. The problem is the script, which is lame at times; attempts at witty "repartee" mostly fall flat. The film is well-designed, with lots of inventive visuals, but that can't really save it.
saw this movie mainly just because I generally enjoy Will Smith films. Alas, his talent, and the talents of his co-stars, are wasted (although Kenneth Branagh at least seems to be relishing his role).
