Review of Wild Things (1998) by John N — 26 Apr 2010
I imagine many condemn this film due to the intensely erotic love scenes. Personally, I think movie-goers need to come up with better reasons than that to condemn a film especially if it has not been seen. The film does not suggest that the moral choices of the characters are acceptable; but, it does ask us to accept these people and their situations as we are drawn into a deeply disturbing mystery. I found it fascinating how the film keeps you wondering who the master- mind is right to the very end. Believe it or not, but this film has its roots in post-war thrillers of the 40's and early 50's.
Are the characters sexually driven? Yes. Are they psychologically twisted? Yes. But so was Hannibal Lecter, Norman Bates, and even Dracula. We certainly do not have to like the characters, but we can appreciate the craft and ingenuity behind a well-constructed film.
