Review of Wild Things (1998) by Tyler M — 31 Mar 2012
Neve Campbell as a hot gothic chick... Need I say more?... Yes, yes I do.
Yeah, if you read the tagline, than you already know the best part of this film...Okay, so I've got a thing for gothic chicks, so sue me... Aside from her though, there's not much here.
The Story: Twists and turns abound in this steamy Florida thriller. It's a bit hard to explain without spoiling anything, but I'll try my best not to give too much away. A high school guidance counseler is accused of raping two students. As the story unfolds you find, that no one is what they seem. It soon turns into a tale of lust, greed, and a even a little revenge. It moves along somewhat quickly told with a decent sense of style, though nothing incredibly ground breaking or amazing. It's also told with a lot of sex...And believe me when I when I say, that "a lot of sex" is an understatement, some parts of this are just plain pornographic. And as we all know, my thoughts on sex in movies is: if it's not done tastefully, or tactfully, or doesn't somehow move the story along and actually have a purpose than there's no room for it in a movie! All the sex in this film is done in the sleeziest of ways, and it doesn't really move the story along at all, it's more or less just put in here to sell the movie.
The Cast: Matt Dillon, Kevin Bacon, Neve Campbell, Denise Richards, Bill Murray...These are some good respectable actors right? So why the hell are they here in this filth? These are the questions for which I seek answers...The acting is poor from even the best of actors. Matt Dillon seems to have one the lottery of life as he gets two incredibly hot women in one film at one time, maybe he was just too distracted to actually act good. Kevin Bacon, I'm not sure what his problem was here, but it's definately not his best work, hell it's almost laughable at times. Bill Murray...WHY?! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MAN, WHY?! How could he possibly think this film was worth participating in? He's got enough good things behind him that I can over look this crap, but still, it's just beyond me why he thought this film would be a good idea to be in. Denise Richards, doesn't really act all that good, but most people watching this film aren't going to be watching this for her acting abilities. This movie was targeted to men, and she's one reason most men are going to watch this, talk about a serious sexual object here. Neve Campell, okay, so we've already established that I like gothic chicks, nothing wrong with that...But I also have a soft spot for Neve Campell, I've had a thing for her since Scream. So you take Campell and you turn her into a gothic chick, and you've got me watching (I know I'm week!)...Unfortunately, she doesn't act too well here either, but like Denise Richards not too many people of this films target audience is going to care whether or not she's a quality actress. She's less of an object than Denise Richards, but still a major object...So there's the cast, all pretty respectable, but for some reason or other they managed to get entangled in a crappy movie.
One to Five Scale: 2.
It's an intriguing story, but it's over run by needless sex. Most men will undoubtedly want to see this for the obvious reasons. But women and men who aren't completely obsessed with sex will do best to avoid this one.
