Review of Wild Target (2010) by Markellus R — 08 Feb 2011
For Fans Of: Bill Nighy.
Date Night: Nope.
Art Factor: None.
Fun Factor: Low.
Emotional Factor: None.
Intelligence Factor: None.
Essential Viewing: No.
The Plot: The best assassin in England takes on a young aprentice while looking after a beautiful but carless thief.
10 Quick Hits.
1) Emily Blunt is as beautiful as ever. Having said that, let it be known her performance is shit and will not make nonfans fans.
2) Rupert Grint, who I still say is the most talented of the big three from the Potter series, does nothing here to help me convince anyone of the that fact. Also sports possibly the worst facial hair in movie history.
3) Bill Nighy earned all 40 points by himself. The man is amazing and it kills me that most casual film goers would only have seen him as Davey Jones from Pirates.
4) Not to harp, but even after finding out how bad this is I would still have watched it just to see Nighy do his thing.
5) I understand that this a remake of a French film. Haven't seen it but I bet the players in the original wanted to strangle every involved not named Nighy.
6) Rupert Everett, what the fuck happened to you man? He was terrible in this.
7) Director Johnathan Lynn does an awesome job of making sure the shots are in focus. (For any idiots, this is jab and a put down to Lynn).
8) The soundtrack is psuedo indie chick heavy so if that is your bag, you might want to check it out. I'm talking to you Kate Nash fan.
9) The screenplay misses every opertunity to cash in and takes every liberity to do nothing with all this talent.
10) Eileen Atkins, who plays Nighy's mother in the film, deserves a pass. She was pretty damn amusing.
Final Thought.
Silly (and not in that good way) and half cooked. I hate when great casts are pissed away and this one just lets em float on down the way. I would say only hardcore Nighy fans bother and even then, know what your watching for.
