Victor Sjostrom (in his last role) plays an elderly doctor on a day in which he travels to collect an award for his life's work. The doctor has shunned most human contact, had an unhappy marriage and has an unhappy son and daughter-in-law.
His travel through the day in flashbacks and dreams shows themes of emotional coldness, death and loneliness transformed into forgiveness, reconciliation and peace.
