The Silence Trilogy are not the Bergman's only films that ask us "Why is god silent?" It's a central preoccupation of The Virgin Spring and The Seventh Seal as wel (and probably others I have not seen)l.
And here Bergman addresses the same feelings of isolation and anomie from an atheistic perspective, and does so with a wonderful depth of feeling and insight, as always.
