Review of Wild Strawberries (2012) by Tim R — 20 Jun 2011
Wild Strawberries tells the tale of an aging Professor who reminisces about his life and the choices he has made. That makes it sound so simple and yet in Ingmar Bergman's hands it is anything but.
Instead of just memories he splices in dreams that haunt and teach him about his life. Spicing up the proceedings are a trio of young adults on their way to Italy that hitch a ride with the professor that bring some energy and fun.
Also along for the ride is his daughter-in-law who is trying desperately to understand the man she married and hopes to glean some truth from the father he emulates so much. All of the elements are blended together with masterful scene composition and dialogue that draws you into their world.
the film presents no absolute endings or answers but then again I think that's the point.
