Review of Wild Rovers (1971) by Jeffrey P — 17 Jun 2011
Blake Edwards makes his roadshow version of "The Wild Bunch", complete with languid dissolves and slow-motion shootouts. Occasional Edwards cohort Philip H. Lathrop makes the picture good-looking: it's strongly-staged.
Jerry Goldsmith gives the proceedings a rousing score, and Holden is fine as usual - unfortunately the chemistry between him and O'Neal (like much of the film) is just a little off. Perhaps Peckinpah's brand of nihilism ill suits Edwards' lighter tastes.
..at the end of the day, it's just not all that wild.
