Review of Wild Card (2015) by Leon B — 02 Aug 2015
Review:
I really thought that there was going to be more to this film, or some major twists in the storyline but it ends abruptly, without any comeback from Nick Wilds actions. Anyway, the movie is based on a bodyguard in Las Vegas (Statham) who ends up in a bit of trouble after beating up a gangster who brutally raped and beaten his ex-girlfriend. On top of that, he has a gambling problem and he really wants to get enough money to get out of Vegas. With the gangsters on his tail, without a penny to his name, he takes on a client who wants a bit of danger in his life because he doesn't have much confidence. The movie had enough characters to make it interesting but they only popped in and out of the storyline. I did like Nick Wilds character and I found myself shouting at the screen when he was gambling but the script was weak and there wasn't an end to the various characters storylines. People just seemed to be popping in and out of the film whilst Nick is trying to work out what to do with himself. Like most Statham movies, you get some cool fighting scenes were Nick Wild walks of untouched but I still was expecting more after seeing the trailers. At the end of the day, it's what it says on the tin so don't expect anything clever or dramatic. Average!
Round-Up:
Most of Stathams movies make a healthy profit at the box office but this one really didn't go down that well with the audiences. Maybe it's time for Statham to actually act and not rely on his fighting capabilities! Saying that, I did like him at the beginning of the film, when he was trying to chat up the lovely Sofia Vergara, because you actually get to see a different side to Statham. Anyway, at 48 years old Jason Statham has definitely become the action man of the big screen. He also entered the Fast and Furious franchise alongside the Rock and Vin Diesel so he'll have to step up his game against those powerhouses. This movie was directed by Simon West, who brought you films like Con Air, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, the Expendables 2 and the Mechanic which also starred Statham. Personally, I wasn't impressed with the execution of this storyline because it kept on jumping from one situation to another. On the plus side, I did feel for Nick Wild when he was gambling away his money but apart from that, it's just another average movie from Statham.
Budget: $30million.
Worldwide Gross: $2million.
I recommend this movie to people who are into their action/crime/dramas about a bodyguard in Las Vegas who has a gambling problem and the mafia on his tail. 4/10.
