Review of Wild at Heart (1990) by Allan C — 21 Apr 2012
One of my favorite David Lynch films, but a bit more cluttered and not as coherent as his masterpiece, "Blue Velvet". Like most Lynch films, this is definitely not for all tastes and many will find it a repellent film and story.
Still, the film is filled with some beautiful imagery (and some beautifully grotesque imagery) and really does a fine job of creating compelling characters is a truly mad and crazy world. My main wondering, compared to "Blue Velvet" which did feel like a very focused and coherent piece, this film felt as if there were lots of bits simply thrown in for quirky and strange "Lynchian" moments rather than belonging to the film as a larger whole.
However, that is also the nature of road films, which this very much is, so those seemly unconnected side trips could potentially be justified as appropriate. In any case, "Wild at Heart" is a very unique film and very much a David Lynch film that will be enjoyable to those who know what they are in for.
