Review of Wild at Heart (1990) by Mark N — 07 Jul 2012
A flawed film, but one with many facets and much to enjoy. As you'd expect from a Lynch film, Wild At Heart looks fantastic and is filled with haunting imagery. It's not one of Lynch's best, but definitely provides an accessible platform for newcomers to his work and is thoroughly enjoyable.
The cast are superb too, I'm not a big Nicolas Cage fan, but he does a great job here as southern fugitive-from-mother-in-law Sailor Ripley. Laura Dern's actual mother Diane Ladd puts in a great performance as Lula's insane mother Marietta, who wants Sailor dead at any cost.
The supporting cast are great too, with short, but memorable appearances from Grace Zabriskie, David Patrick Kelly, Jack Nance and Willem Dafoe.
