Review of Wild at Heart (1990) by Chris M — 18 Jul 2012
I rewatched this for the first time in about 20 years. It's a messy, gory mashup of a road movie, a love story and a surreal, twisted spin on The Wizard of Oz. Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern overact in mostly very good ways as the young lovers beset on all sides by chaos and violence.
There are startling images and scenes throughout, with some truly unpleasant moments. Willem Dafoe steals what is undoubtedly a strange and disturbing film with the strangest and most disturbing performance I've seen in a long while.
His scene with Laura Dern is as uncomfortable as it gets.
