Review of Wild (2014) by Zac R — 22 Jan 2015
Easily the film I'd reccomend out of this weeks releases (over american sniper and the wedding ringer), Wild is directed by Jean Marc-Falle(dallas buyers club) and staring Reece witherspoon(Cheryl Strayed), and makes me wish I had more chances to go on life changing hikes through western america.
The landscape is a big part of this film, I'd even go as far as to say its the co-star of the film. This film also changes what I thought of witherspoon, who had been completely off my radar since as an actor since the early 00's.
She is great in this role, which is high praise considering the character Cheryl isn't necessarily someone you'll like at the end of this film. The style of storytelling may frustrate some to start, as we're given bits and pieces of whats driven the lead to take this epic hike across the wilderness.
I enjoyed it though, it had me condeming and then second guessing my assumptions about the Cheryl, which is engaging for the audience if anything. The film also blends the beauty and brutality of nature successfully, and teaches that every triumph can come at a cost.
Wild's pace matches the lead's steady stride, ending too suddenly. However it successfully convey's that sometimes its ok to go it alone, to prove to yourself that you have the drive to overcome your own demons.
it's a hard film to sum up, a simple premise with rich depth of character. Thats a reccomendation, anyway.
