Review of Wild (2014) by Byron B — 22 Feb 2015
The real Cheryl Strayed trekked about 600 miles less than Robyn Davidson as portrayed in the movie Tracks from this same year. Both are about a solitary hero's journey. Cheryl (Witherspoon) doesn't face any 127 Hours desperation on the Pacific Crest Trail, but, after getting lost in drugs and meaningless sex after the death of her mother, she discovers her inner strength by continuing to put one foot in front of the other.
By quoting poetry, literature, and philosophy along the trail she becomes famous amongst the other hikers. The repeated use of Simon & Garfunkel's cover of El Condor Pasa (If I Could) about returning home fits the mood of the picture well.
