Review of Wild (2014) by Daniel D — 19 Apr 2015
The main character is going through what's called "a dark night of the soul." She's someone who is deeply wounded, heartbroken, disillusioned, angry, bitter, in tremendous pain. The hike is really about her relationship with herself, about resolving conflicts and coming to terms with failures and disappointments.
It's about survival and self-acceptance and overcoming physical obstacles as a way of proving her inner strength to herself. It raises the question, "what does it mean to be a strong woman?" You have Cheryl, someone who is more active and aggressive and always has to conquer this and that, and became so lost in life.
She also has defensive instincts and perceives the world as threatening. And then you have her mother (played by Laura Dern) who spends her whole life as a wife, then a mother, never living for herself, yet able to enjoy life and be appreciative and grateful during tough times.
