Review of Wild (2014) by Michael R — 30 May 2015
This was one I heard good things about, and hoped it would be about self discovery and the power of nature the way that Into the Wild was...boy was I wrong.
I sat there waiting for the movie to get my interest, for me to feel a connection to the character, but honestly, it was BORING. There's nothing but her walking and flashbacks to how bad her life was. She has no real epiphanies until she's at the end of her trip, and that ends up being a lame voiceover about the great things that happen to her after she finished the trip. I saw afterwards that Nick Hornby wrote the screenplay and I was shocked, because he's one of my favourite writers...I wish they'd let him put in some jokes. It was not enjoyable, nor was the cinematography all that impressive, and she spent half the trip off of the trail in towns or getting help from other people, or banging the first nice guy she met in Oregon, and this somehow got her over her ex? Nope. Didn't connect or believe this at all. I just sat there waiting for it to be over. Very disappointing.
