Review of Wild (2014) by Joanna B — 05 Jul 2015
Life-affirming and perspective inducing, Wild is a richly textured film about confronting life's choices and rising above ones regrets. A captivating emotional powerhouse story of adventure, tale of redemption and mother-daughter love story expertly amalgamated into one.
Haunted by memories of her mother Bobbi (Laura Dern), years of reckless behavior, heroin abuse and the destruction every relationship including her marriage; Cheryl Strayed (Reece Witherspoon) makes a rash decision.
Cramming her entire life into a backpack, Cherly sets out on a life-changing hike to travel the thousand miles from Mexico to Canada on the US Pacific Crest Trail solo... with no experience.
Witherspoon is wonderful, and like her characters pack, drags viewers through each distressing, rewarding, traumatic and beautiful moment of the journey.
The Verdict: Embracing physical hardship to confront inner demons, Wild pierces the spirit.
