Review of Wiener-Dog (2016) by Chazzyc . — 08 Jul 2016
This is a lovely, poetic work about death. Like real life, there is humor, tragedy, suffering, love, despair and hope. And like real life, there's blood and shit and ignorance and grace. People complain about the monstrous character who describes spaying to her young son in terms of rape and racism - and later explains what it means "to put down" a being who suffers in terms that include "we don't believe in God.
" Later in the film, we're introduced to a happily married couple with Down Syndrome, and we're invited to identify with them emotionally, only to be told later that they, like the dog, have been "spayed.
" What was that about racism, etc.? And in the end we're confronted with death. "We don't believe in God," but Wiener-Dog still gets resurrected. Go worship your secret life of pets.
If you're ever able to wake up and face the shit, "The truth will set you free.".
