Review of Widows (2018) by Singtribe H — 16 Nov 2018
At a quick glance Widows is a tight, suspenseful heist thriller, expertly shot, with some outstanding performances. Once you get a bit below the surface it becomes clear Steve McQueen has much more to say here and skillfully uses the heist thriller as a vehicle to explore deeper issues such as class, race, and political corruption.
The ability to blend a thoughtful examination of social issues with knuckle biting action is, I think, what made this one work so well for me. All the performances were commendable, and aside from Viola Davis as the lead, Daniel Kaluuya was the standout for me, absolutely nailing his role.
There is also one of the best shot scenes I have seen this year, as McQueen makes some creative choices to subtly (and at times not so subtly) help the viewers better understand the dynamics of the system these characters are operating in.
