Review of Widows (2018) by Hector V — 17 Nov 2018
Liam Neeson passionately sucking/biting the ever living joy out of Viola Davis' face for a solid ten seconds shows you exactly what you're in for in the introduction of Widows, a bold, brash, but overly self-indulgent new movie penned by Gillian Flynn ('Gone Girl,' the novel and screenplay) and co-written and directed by Steve McQueen ('12 Years a Slave').
With McQueen's dark, foreboding direction and Flynn's tricky script, 'Widows' is too highbrow to be a simple crime thriller, but also too lowbrow to feel like it has something of substance to say.
There's definitely something going on regarding Chicago's gentrification, race, sex, and the idea of power, but it's hard to come by given the intertwined nature of the film. A second viewing may help the film out.
