Review of Widows (2018) by Gabriel R — 19 Nov 2018
I went into this movie expecting a lot. Maybe that was my mistake.
Getting straight to the point, the acting was really great all around. There were also some really interesting character choices as well - specifically Colin Farrell's character motivations and Daniel Kaluuya's character's preferred way to kill time. These plus more smart, small details really exacerbated my overall disappointment with the rest of the film.
The characters were all so interesting yet the film showed more interest in spending itï¿ 1/2(TM)s runtime pacing back and forth rather than explore the characters further. By the end of the film, we know just as much about most of the main characters as we did within the first 10 minutes of the film.
This was a big disappointment for me and made the overly predictable finale that much more of a let down.
There were definitely some really enjoyable moments throughout the film - in particular the opening sequence and a tracking shot detailing the outside view of a characterï¿ 1/2(TM)s car as he is driven home. However, I left the theatre wishing that the film spent more time on the characters that they meticulously built and less time standing still.
