Review of Why We Fight (2005) by Masked Man — 23 Jul 2006
One of the most effective antidotes to hegemony is a historic example of when the scenario wasn't true. Case in point from this movie: a president warned us against the infiltrating, myriad perils of a military-industrial complex, before we really had one - Eisenhower. Yes, there was a time when there was no military-industrial complex. Do any of us ever remember that George Washington warned us against the threat a standing army posed to a democratic country? Does anyone exercise doublethink to reconcile the fact that only the legislature is constitutionally enabled to declare war, and the fact that Bush is waging this 'war'?
Seeing the tape of Eisenhower's broadcasted farewell speech was really startling. The extent of our militarization that people think is necessary or take for granted, or think is just the way America is, is not only unnecessary, it's cause for agitating for change.
Effective film in the way it used the Eisenhower speech as the spiderweb to link many related, personal, and critical stories. The Lieutenant Colonel/Pentagon official's and the NYPD cop/Vietnam vet's stories were key.
And you thought Project for a New American Century was a myth.
On a related note, gee, $ = speech so to curtail campaign financing and spending curtails free speech?? What kind of upside down argument is that??
