Review of Why Him? (2016) by Nuclear Mike R — 30 Dec 2016

An unexpectedly hilarious variant of Hamburg's "Meet the Parents" .... on steroids, this film simultaneously satires and tips it's hat to previous, current, and future generations. Expecting another mindless pot-head, Bevis and Butthead, outlandish and unbelievable style [lack of] comedy for which Franco is famed, it's actually quite funny.

..in fact, I found myself belly laughing often [as the plot called for such over the top shock humor]. And expecting the awkward dad vs. daughter's boyfriend thing to wear out, the satire and subtle messages came on many fronts, while the references [old and new] were on the mark and actually quite smart [if not, too deep - similar to Hamberg's "Zoolander"].

The vulgar Franco/Rogan style humor for once found its niche, while the stellar cast [and I can't help to think that Ben Stiller's influence] and family centric plot provided its heart. Given that gamers, philosophy geeks, and political junkies will quibble over content, and many will find it too offensive, I found this movie to be refreshingly funny and interesting throughout - which is an uncommon and welcome relief from most modern lame-o comedies.

See the "Varity" review....I think it hits the mark. Me, I would give it an A- to B+.
