Review of Why Him? (2016) by Rachel A — 29 Dec 2017
This movie stays in one place for the majority of it - Bryan Cranston is the out of touch father, constantly the butt of every misunderstanding, bad joke, (and I mean bad), and the go-to curmudgeon. The movie starts better than it continues, with James Franco's character being absolutely ridiculous and everyone, including the girlfriend in his corner, reacting accordingly.
But once you get past twenty minutes, Franco's unlikeable outlier miraculously wins every one over. The set ups for the narrative and the majority of the characters support of it makes absolutely no sense and you are quickly brought out it.
This was a movie filled with caricatures, reused Hollywood blue humor and a story that no one cares about. At best, you just wait for the next gag, if you can find any of them funny. Big fan of Franco and Cranston.
But this feels like you're a fly on the wall in a room of some very stoned, sleep deprived writers.
