Review of Why Him? (2016) by John G — 29 Dec 2016
A harmless, dull little film, constantly telling you how funny and outrageous it is. Like a horde of humorless middle-aged folks telling random jokes, while explaining and commenting on each others' jokes... And with the same amount of plot.
Looked far better in the trailer, probably because it was a better cut. You'll see scenes from the trailer with more talk added between lines. It helps realize how bloated what you watch is.
There's too many forgettable comedies at or above the mediocre line to consider watching this. It's a shame it's so near that line you can make the mistake. Watching this film trying to squeeze extra funny hahas from what's not fun in the first place is just pathetic.
As an example of what's considered funny, an old-school papa whose character can be summarized in 'old-school' will go from 'punch' to 'bite testicles' in seconds if he feels threatened. Because why not. I wondered why the writers couldn't save this beyond-hilarious comedic gem for a future project, since like many other things, it just didn't fit here.
Couldn't help but recall that 'How to Do Visual Comedy' video on YouTube. Talks about Edgar Wright. Go watch that.
