Review of Why Him? (2016) by Candace B — 15 Dec 2016
No it wasn't very good if we look at it critically. But I'm rating a comedy like a comedy here. Why Him? is a comedy, and boy did it deliver in the laughter department. Why Him? tells an all too familiar Hollywood story of the boyfriend trying to win the parents over.
Sure it's predictable, over the top, nothing really got told, etc. Any element that makes a stereotypical Hollywood comedy stereotypical, this movie has. But making a think piece was not what Jonah Hill had in mind when he wrote the story, nor was it what James Franco had in mind when he took the gig.
They wanted to make the audience laugh, and that they did. It was 111min of non-stopping laughter. Yeah there were unanswered questions and not a whole lot of plot, but hey, why bother if those things are just gonna take away the time you could be using to make people laugh.
Until Jonah Hill comes out and says he was actually shooting for an Oscar-worthy think piece, this is a great movie that served its purpose. Don't overthink it. You see this movie to be entertained, and you certainly will be.
