Review of Why Don't You Play in Hell? (2013) by Peter P — 19 Apr 2015
You've got two main story arcs going on in this film: a group of kids who aspire to be filmmakers, yet 10-15 years later are still amateurs slacking off. The other is a yakuza conflict between a few gangs.
The father one of the yakuza gangs has his wife in prison, who is bound to be released in 10 days, and wants to surprise her with their daughter's role in the film. When the film deal falls through and he needs a film made, that's when these two arc collide: a bunch of crazy, amateur, thick headed 30 year old filmmaker wannabes helping to shoot a film with the yakuza.
There is so much more to this film that can't be summarized, but the film is just hilarious, and if filmmaking + yakuza coming together like that seems bizarre in itself... it gets even more bizarre in execution! Filled with dark comedy, violence, and the hilarious nature of these two subjects colliding, filled with an overwhelming amount of conflicts with various characters, it becomes a big comedic romp of gang violence and pushing limits to the edge for the glory of making a film.
It's highly enjoyable and is worth a watch for any aspiring filmmakers who've always dreamed the impossible and the insane.
