Review of Who's That Knocking at My Door (1968) by Zack H — 13 Feb 2007
As entertainment, ?Who?s That Knocking at My Door,? is far from a masterpiece. It was originally created as three separate short pieces while Scorsese was in film school and thus the transitions between various scenes often seem fractured.
Entire scenes, especially the gratuitous sex scenes between J.R. and a series of prostitutes, seem to contribute very little to the plot. In terms of keeping the viewer's interest, the film succeeds in some of the intriguing camera work and at times in the overall mood of the scenes.
The concept and psychology of the overall theme are multilayered and ambitious for an upstart in the movie business, but the plot is also weakened by the aforementioned flaws. The plot is often meandering and at times unintelligible.
The film is best seen as the experiment of a talented student than as an actual contribution from a groundbreaking director..
