Review of Who's That Knocking at My Door (1968) by Adam Z — 09 Apr 2009
Martin Scorsese's debut feature-length picture is a curious piece of prototype film-making for the master director. All of his trademark techniques are here, which makes 'Boxcar Bertha's lack of those touches even more surprising.
To put it bluntly, 'Who's That Knocking...' is nouvelle vague by any other name, from the dis-jointed montage narrative through to the Hollywood hero-worship dialogue between the two leads (something straight out of 'A Bout De Souffle').
The film shows that Scorsese was quite prepared to hit the ground running, even if it did take several years before he worked the same way.
