Review of Who's That Knocking at My Door (1968) by Abdel A — 18 Aug 2009
Before watching "Who's That Knocking at my Door" I wasn't expecting the Scorsese we have today (it would have been dumb for me to expect that) since this was his first mayor film. What I was excited about is seeing this director on his first time behind the camera.
The movie shows us the life and relationtip of one man, J.R., as he falls in love with a young woman and has fun with his friends. The story is quite simple, and that's the piont, the important thing here isn't the story (wich at times I found it to be going nowhere) but the relationship of J.R. with the people around him and most important, with the Girl. This is where I find the strong point of the movie, the characters look and act like real people. Maybe the whole problem J.R. and the Girl face could have been developed a bit more.
The film looks more like a practice ground for the young Scorsese, some of his now characteristic style shows through here, but it looks like he experimented with the editing and shots, those scenes where he only uses music and camera movement (the rape scene, the long sex scene) are great, those are my favorite scenes of the moive. What can be seen here is a young director stablishing his style.
In the end "Who's that Knocking at My Door" is a great movie where we can see the great things to come from the mind of Scorsese.
