Review of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) by Manny C — 23 Feb 2008
Taylor& Burton's on again off again off screen relationships gave this film the chemistry it deserves....its a little long, but around the corner there's always another "Game" to play, until the Final Game puts the gameplaying and ranting to rest for another night.
..this film, as I understand it, broke alot of taboos in its day, so it may seem quite timid by contemporary standards, but the profanity, the innuendos, double entendres and verbal jousting were groundbreakers.
None of the characters are particularly likeable, but they're not meant to be likeable. By the end of the movie, you feel like you've done 15 rounds with the characters, drank as much alcohol as them, and the thin veil of pretense over these 4 peoples' lives are peeled away, to borrow a phrase from the movie.
Truth hurts. Imagine anyone else other than Elizabeth Taylor in this role? Not a chance.
