Review of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) by Darryl J — 15 Jun 2008
Holy Shit.
This was an experience.
One of the greatest directorial debuts ever. It owes a lot to the play but Mike Nichols directing puts every emotion into hyperdrive. While Nichols directing was amazing, the real stars here were the actors. This is my first Elizabeth Taylor film and I'm blown away by her acting ability. Same with Richard Burton. I haven't seen actor's tear into a script like this in a long time. This could've been a complete misfire but all the actors dedicate themselves to the material and it shows. Segal and Dennis were also great. It's emotionally draining watching these two play their "games" but also addictively fun. I was so tired when I turned this on but I instantly felt energized by the first 5 minutes. I can't wait to watch this again. I only wish real people could be this witty. Arguments would be a lot more entertaining...or not.
