Review of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) by Liam C — 12 Jan 2014
It's very hard to talk about a movie critically when you have nothing but positive things to say about it. My review for Cloud Atlas was only a paragraph and Leaving Las Vegas was merely a line, which I should try to change for both but they're archived now but alas we're talking about this classic.
Again, the film I got and the film I thought I was going to get were different but in this case not that much so. From all I read and saw in the trailer I thought this film would be about a couple who hate each other but like each other after they get drunk and verbally torment their guests for the duration of the film and for the most part I was correct.
For a film that's about nothing but dialogue the dialogue had to be good and of course it is! The way the characters spoke is a way that I've never seen people do before or see again. At first I thought it was a bit odd how they were speaking, like it was overly aggressive but before long I realised that the aggressiveness had only just begun.
I'm still finding it difficult to believe that Martha was played by the absolutely beautiful Elizabeth Taylor, I know she gained 30 pounds but it doesn't even look like her, bravo! I feel bad for Richard Burton, he really deserved that Oscar, or hell, any of them.
Everyone did an amazing job with acting and keeping me interested, the film is very deep and I still don't think I got everything. For awhile I was unaware of what was going on, for a minute I thought there was some elaborate con going on or it was a test to see how long the guests would stay, considering George talks about teaching a lot but it was nothing more than two bitter old people literally hating each other.
I want to watch it again but the movie was such an unpleasant experience but for all the right reasons, I think I might need to wait. With all the shouting and foul language going on, I'm in no hurry to see it again but at the same time I want to go out and buy the DVD as soon as possible to experience it at least one more time.
