Review of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) by Victor L — 11 Mar 2011
A masterpiece. Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf? is a gripping and shocking film that shows a couple (whose love is apparently broken due to a lot of frustrations) trying to hurt each other and self - destruct themselves with addictions in one night only. They would utilize their neighbors for their sick purposes.
I like the movies whose screenplay (written by the incomparable Ernest Lehman) is that complex because they make you think more than usual and makes you want to see the picture again and again because you're sure that the second time you're certainly going to see things you didn't get the first time.
Elizabeth Taylor is terrific here, her beauty was vanished with those grotesque clothes, makeup, ways to walk, voice and manners. I think this is the movie that best exposes her talent, but I prefer to watch her in more glamourous roles.
The whole cast (only 4 actors) is amazing and Mike Nichols had one of the greatest directorial debuts ever.
