Review of Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) by Alexander P — 24 Jun 2012
Even though not the originators of this kind of film making, they are the ones that perfected it. Who Framed Roger Rabbit is based on Gary K Wolf's Who Censored Roger Rabbit? Though that book was good at it's own merits, Who Framed Roger Rabbit is the one that everybody thinks of. And they should. This movie was groundbreaking for it's time, it takes a lot of time, patience and hard work to choreograph live action with animated characters, but it's a whole other thing to make it look seamless. That's what these guys did, they made you believe that these things were truly interacting with the real world.
The story is about progress, how some things should stay the way it is and the other way around. Case in point, the train system and how Judge Doom will dismantle it along with Toon Town to build himself a freeway. The movie tells us that destroying life's is not the way to go when it comes to progress, even though that's not the way it goes most of the time in real life. Also, it symbolized how cartoons of old are slowly dying even though they are saved at the end. That also symbolized that our memories will never die, in this case the old cartoons we use to watch and Eddie Vailant's memories of his dead brother, even though it will be disappear eventually.. it will not be forgotten. But that's hidden from it's otherwise cracker jack mystery caper. Our main hero Eddie Vailant is a private eye investigator who hates toons that inadvertently gets caught in between a scandal involving Roger Rabbit murdering Marvin Acme, but Roger Rabbit pleads that he didn't do it. There's jags to be had with this movie, something for everyone of all ages, and there is a lot of adult undertones in this movie. But the little ones will be able to watch this.
This movie is a one of kind experience, and just like it's message it's trying to convey, and will not be forgotten for a long time.
