Review of Whiteout (2009) by Daniel K — 24 Mar 2010
1: It does not have what it takes. The setting is great, but I suspect just about any film set in Antarctica after Encounters at the End of the World will seem a little trite and false. The film fails to create the appropriate secluded and extreme atmosphere to make the film memorable.
It needs more of The Thing. Beckinsale is beautiful as always, but she doesn't have a whole lot to work with, nor does she do much with it. The story seems forced, a bit unbelievable, and nothing flows.
A few of the action scenes are reasonably thrilling, but on the whole very little of the film actually held my attention. The third act was perhaps a bit better than the others, but the whole film was fairly predictable.
I considered 1.5, but on the whole it is seriously sloppy filmmaking.
