Review of Whiteout (2009) by Stewart S — 03 May 2010
Whilst the twist is obvious, the acting is hollow, and the killer is revealed far too easily, this actually manages to be an enjoyable thriller for two thirds of its length. The Antarctic helps in creating a dangerous, uncontrolled setting, and there is one surprising development for lead character, Carrie Stetko (Kate Beckinsale) that amazingly makes her feel real and sympathetically three-dimensional. It is directed without much verve and the latter storm scenes are rather confusing, but the central mystery of discovering the identity of the killer is still entertaining. Once he has been unmasked the whole thing goes downhill quickly, but although the twist is easily deciphered it plays out with unconvential solemn and effective drama.
Kate Beckinsale is, as always, a solid but not especially remarkable heroine, and Tom Skeritt adds steady support as the camp's Doctor.
It's a very inconsequential film, but you could certainly do worse for a couple of hours.
