Review of Whiteout (2009) by Michael D — 08 Feb 2012
Luke-warm suspense/thriller that heavily relies on harsh winter conditions for a lot of its intensity, which only works so far. Beckinsale, who is very sweet to look at (especially in the opening), plays a U.
S. marshal in the Antarctic investigating a series of murders at a research base and must determine who the killer is before a total whiteout entraps those working there for the next 6 months. Fans of the 1982 version of "The Thing" will no doubt see this one as a mild knock-off with no mutating monster featured here.
Besides the brutal weather, some of the thrills also come from the brutal violence that also keeps your interest to a point. Seeing this when its cold out might add a little bit more bite to it too. Other than that, it isn't that difficult to figure out who the main baddie is here and the familiarity in several scenes is very obvious.
It did, however, make me want to see Carpenter's sci-fi/horror masterpiece again!
